A standard auto policy was never built for a collector car

Standard auto insurance pays actual cash value at the time of a loss, depreciated the way an ordinary daily driver depreciates. That math doesn’t work for a car that’s appreciating, or at minimum holding value, because it’s a collector piece rather than transportation. Specialty collector car coverage solves this with agreed value: you and the carrier settle on the car’s worth up front, and that’s what gets paid on a total loss, no depreciation, no argument after the fact.

The tradeoffs that come with it

Agreed value coverage almost always comes with mileage limits, commonly somewhere between 1,000 and 7,500 miles a year depending on the carrier, and explicit exclusions for commuting, ride-share use, racing, and commercial use. These aren’t obstacles, they’re the mechanism that keeps the coverage affordable: a car driven a few hundred miles a year to shows and club events is a fundamentally different risk than a daily commuter, and the policy is priced accordingly.

What we check for Ohio collectors

  • Whether the agreed value reflects a current, defensible number, not a figure set years ago and never revisited
  • Whether the mileage cap matches how the car is actually used, including trips to shows and club events around Ohio
  • Storage requirements, since many specialty policies require the vehicle be kept in a locked, enclosed structure
  • Coverage while the car is in transit to a show, an auction, or a restoration shop, a gap a standard auto policy doesn’t anticipate at all

The car isn’t the risk most owners underinsure. The agreed value they set five years ago and never looked at again is.

Part of the full picture

A collector car gets scheduled and reviewed as part of the same full asset review as everything else, alongside your home, your other valuables, and your liability coverage, not priced in isolation from the rest of your policy.
